À l’occasion de la sortie de leur nouvel album The Main Thing, les Américains de Real Estate nous ont permis d’échanger avec eux sur leur cinquième opus et leur carrière. Un échange qui permet de mieux comprendre comment l’album a été conçu, et ce que l’on peut en attendre.

La Face B : Est-ce que vous ressentez un sentiment d’accomplissement au regard de vos dix premières années de carrière en tant que groupe ?
Real Estate : Oui absolument. C’est génial de se dire que ça fait dix ans qu’on est un groupe et qu’on a toujours l’opportunité de faire des disques et de tourner dans le monde. On se sent très chanceux. C’est aussi très effrayant – la plupart des groupes ne dépassent pas la barre des 10 ans !
LFB : Selon vous, quelles différences y a-t-il entre votre nouvel album et vos précédents travaux ?
RE : D’une certain façon, faire un cinquième album est plus difficile qu’un premier ou un deuxième. Bien sûr, on a de l’expérience en studio, mais on a aussi des mécanismes profondément ancrés, des choses que l’on fait sans même s’en rendre compte. On a travaillé dur pour les identifier et ne pas juste nous répéter.
LFB : Pour vous, c’est quoi le plus important [The Main Thing] ?
RE : Le plus important c’est de faire ce que tu aimes, ce qui nourrit ton âme comme une inspiration pour les personnes que tu aimes. Ne pas tomber dans la complaisance et l’orgueil dans ce que tu choisis de faire.
LFB : Le processus d’écriture s’est trouvé modifié pour cet album, qu’est-ce qui vous a motivé à ce changement ?
RE : Comme expliqué précédemment, c’était vraiment important pour nous d’expérimenter un peu plus sur cet album. On voulait vraiment se pousser à aller vers de nouveaux territoires. On sentait qu’il n’y avait pas d’intérêt à faire encore une fois le même album.
LFB : Les sujets que vous abordez dans l’album sont très sombres, selon vous quel est le rôle des artistes par rapport à ces éléments ?
RE : Les artistes sont libres de s’exprimer de la façon qu’ils souhaitent. Cette fois-ci, nous ne pouvions pas ignorer certaines de nos propres angoisses à propos du monde qui nous entoure. C’était simplement naturel d’écrire en adoptant ce regard.
LFB : Il y a quelque chose d’un rêve torturé dans tous les aspects de vos productions, c’est quelque chose que vous recherchez ?
RE: La vie est un bouquet complexe de sentiments et d’émotions. Rien n’est ni tout blanc ni tout noir, l’ombre et la lumière ont besoin l’un de l’autre pour exister. On essaie de s’exprimer d’une façon authentique et honnête, et c’est ce qui en ressort.
LFB : À quel point vous vous êtes éclatés à filmer un clip avec un cheval ?
RE : C’était très drôle et un peu angoissant. C’est une belle bête !

As their new album The Main Thing comes out, American-based band Real Estate chatted with us about this new record and their career. It allowed us to gain a better understanding of how the album was produced, and what can be expected of it.
La Face B : Is there any feeling of accomplishment when you consider the first ten years of your career as a band?
Real Estate : Yes absolutely. It’s amazing to feel that we have been a band for over a decade and that we still have an opportunity to make records and tour around the world. We feel very lucky. It’s also very scary – because most bands don’t make it past the 10 year mark!
LFB : What would you say is different in your new album in comparison to your previous work ?
RE : In some ways making your 5th album is harder than making your first or second. Of course, we have experience in the studio – but we also have deeply ingrained patterns – certain things we do automatically without realizing them. We worked hard on this record to identify those things so that we wouldn’t just repeat ourselves.
LFB : What is “The Main Thing” according to you?
RE : The main thing is to do what you love – to do what feeds your soul as an example for the people you love. To not get complacent and to take pride in whatever it is you choose to do.
LFB : The writing process was slightly different for this new album, what brought you to experiment with new things ?
RE : Like I mentioned before, it was really important for us to experiment a little more on this album. We really wanted to push ourselves into some new territory. We didn’t feel like there was any point to making the same record another time.
LFB : The issues you tackle in the album are very dark, what do you believe is the role of artists regarding such topics ?
RE : Artists are free to express themselves in whatever way they choose. This time around, we couldn’t ignore some of our own personal anxieties about the world around us. It was only natural to write from that point of view.
LFB : There is something of a twisted dream in every part of your productions, was that on purpose ?
RE : Life is a complex bouquet of feelings and emotions. Nothing is all light or dark, darkness and light depend upon one another to exist. We try to express ourselves in a way that feels truthful and honest, and this is what comes out.
LFB : How fun was it to shoot a video with a horse?
RE : Very fun and a little nerve-wracking. He’s a big guy!
