Cruel, le second single tiré de cet opus vient de sortir (après Erase Me paru plus tôt cette année) et à cette occasion nous lui avons demandé de sélectionner les morceaux qui l’inspirent et qui ont bâti son univers musical.
The Birthday Party – Mutiny In Heaven
FR : The Birthday Party est mon groupe préféré de tous les temps, et c’est mon album préféré d’eux. Je voudrais mettre toutes les chansons mais je choisis celle-ci parce qu’elle est furieuse et qu’elle est une force conductrice puissante ! Tout dans cette chanson est viscéral et m’excite, la batterie et la ligne de basse déferlante avec le chant rythmé et les cris perçant de Nick Cave, la fureur ! Je dois beaucoup à ce groupe pour avoir trouvé mon son à mes débuts, quand je les ai entendus pour la première fois, je me suis sentie un lien de parenté avec la signification et l’utilisation d’une voix laide en surface qui porte un poids plus lourd à cause de son honnêteté.
EN: The Birthday Party are my favourite band of all time, and this is my favourite album of theirs. I want to put all the songs on it but I’ll go with this one because it’s furious and that’s a powerful driving force!
Everything about this song is visceral and gets me hyped, the primal drums and rolling bass line along with Nick Cave‘s rhythmic vocals and shrieks, the fury! I owe a lot to finding my sound early days to this band, when I first heard them, I found a kindred spirit in meaning and using a voice ugly on the surface that holds heavier weight because of its honesty.
Brian Eno – Sombre Reptiles
FR : Cette chanson se trouve sur mon autre album préféré de tous les temps, Another Green World. Encore une fois tout l’album est dément, un vrai cadeau au monde. Je suis une grande fan du travail de Brian Eno en tant qu’artiste expérimental, bien que cette chanson fasse parti de son style plus conventionnel d’écriture. J’ai utilisé ses cartes de Stratégies Obliques (Oblique Strategies cards) lorsque je travaillais mon E.P. How To Move. Cette chanson est un parfait exemple de musique qui dit mille mots sans en utiliser aucun. C’est une réflection calme dansante sombre parfaite.
EN: This song belongs in one of my other favorite albums of all time, Another Green World. Again the whole record is insane, a real gift to the world. I’m a huge fan of Brian Eno‘s work as an experimental artist, even though this song is more on the conventional side of his song writing. I used his Oblique Strategies cards during making my coming E.P. How To Move. This song is a perfect example of music saying a thousand words without using one. It’s a perfect sombre reflection at peace dancing.
Die Haut and Blixa Bargeld – Assisi Machine
FR : Ce morceau comprend deux de mes groupes / artistes préférés donc c’est un peu deux en un. Die Haut était un groupe instrumental allemand phénoménal qui avait des tonnes d’invités au chant sur leurs morceaux et à leurs concerts. Celle-ci a mon gars, Blixa. Le chanteur de Einstürzende Neubauten, un autre groupe qui m’a donné beaucoup d’inspiration pour composer. Lourdement expérimental et industriel. Et excellent à crier ! C’est une des chansons les plus sexy que je connaisse.
EN: This track has two of my favourite band / artist so it feels like a two in one. Die Haut were a phenomenal German instrumental band that had a ton of amazing vocalists guest on their tracks and in live performances. This one has my guy, Blixa. Lead singer of Einstürzende Neubauten, another band that has given me a lot of inspiration in music making. Heavily experimental and industrial. And great at screaming! This is one of the sexiest songs I know.
Joe Hendreson and Alice Coltrane – Earth
FR : Cette chanson est magique ! Mon type de jazz préféré et je suis une grande fan de jazz. Ma relation personnelle avec la composition est la narration (storytelling), le cinema, peindre une image, tous les éléments parlent, pas besoin de mots mais les mots peuvent les accompagner et tout dans la chanson a sa propre voix et c’est pour cela que c’est là. C’est ce qu’est totalement cette chanson ! Tout l’E.P. est incroyable, ça s’appelle The Elements, quatre morceaux et chaque chanson est l’un des quatre éléments traduit en chanson. Elles sont toutes bien mais Earth est vraiment la meilleure. Vous bougerez d’une manière dont vous ne saviez pas que vous pouviez.
EN: This song is magic! My favourite kind of jazz and I’m a big jazz fan. My personal relationship with music making is about storytelling, cinema, painting a picture, all parts speaking, no need for words but words can go alongside and everything in the song has its own voice and that’s why it’s there. This is what this song is to the max! The whole E.P. is incredible, it’s called The Elements, 4 tracks and each song is one of the four elements, translated into song. They’re all great but Earth is the absolute winner. You’ll move to it in ways you didn’t know you could.
Anita Lane – If I Should Die
FR : Une magnifique auteur-compositeur très peu connue, elle a joué avec Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Elle a écrit les mots de Stranger Than Kindness, l’une de mes préférées. J’ai toujours trouvé qu’elle n’avait jamais percé ou trouvé la reconnaissance qu’elle méritait parce qu’elle était dans une scène lourdement masculine dans laquelle peu de femmes étaient autorisées à briller. Au lieu de ça elle devenait un détail aux côtés des hommes les plus brillants de cette scène. Quelque chose dont on a bien heureusement travaillé dur pour changer. La beauté de cette chanson tient pour moi dans sa simplicité et son innocence. Elle me rappelle les The Shangri’Las, et la basse captivante de Barry Adamson soutient le morceau.
EN: Little known beautiful song writer, she had a stint playing in Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. She wrote the words to Stranger Than Kindness, one of my favourites. I always felt she didn’t thrive or get the recognition she deserves because she was in a male heavy scene of music that not many women have been allowed to shine through. instead becoming footnotes of the most successful males of that scene. Something we’ve fortunately been working hard to change. This song holds a beauty for me in it’s simplicity and innocence. Reminds me of The Shangri’Las, and it’s held up by Barry Adamson‘s mesmerising bass.
