ADN : Acide du noyau des cellules vivantes, constituant l’essentiel des chromosomes et porteur de caractères génétiques. Avec ADN, La Face B part à la rencontre des artistes pour leur demander les chansons qui les définissent et les influencent. Pothamus jouait au festival Eurosonic le 20 janvier; l’occasion rêvée pour se pencher sur les influences du groupe de post-métal.
SWANS – The Seer
FR : Swans a eu une influence majeure dans la manière dont nous percevons et approchons la musique. En live, c’est une vraie force de la nature. Ils nous ont appris comment jouer ensemble, en tant que groupe. Et à redéfinir ce qu’était la lourdeur du son pour nous. En effet, ce n’est pas seulement balancer des riffs lourds ou amener des chansons vers des climax épiques.
C’est aussi sculpter la dynamique, les moments de tension et de relâchement. Oser s’accrocher à une note, gratter et répéter pour ce qui paraît l’éternité. Une danse de dissonance et de répétition. Pour atteindre ce point où le public lâche toutes ses attentes et se laisse juste porter par le courant
Nous adorons cette sensation d’excitation cathartique quand nous écoutons Swans, comme si tout pouvait arriver à n’importe quel moment. Toujours tenus en haleine. C’est cette approche sans peur que nous essayons d’atteindre avec Pothamus. Pour résister à l’envie d’impressionner et suivre plutôt les sons, où qu’ils vous emmènent.
EN : Swans has had a major influence on how we perceive and approach music. Experiencing them live is like a force of nature. They taught ushow to perform together as a band. And redefined heaviness for us. Heaviness is not about blasting loud riffs or building up towards epic climaxes.
It’s about sculpting with dynamics, unease and release. Daring to hold on onto one note, strumming and repeating for what seems eternally. A dance of dissonance and repetition. Reaching for that point where the audience drops all expectations and just lets itself go into the current.
We love this sense of cathartic excitement when listening to Swans, as if anything anytime could happen. Always on the edge of your seat. It’s this fearless approach we try to aim for with Pothamus. To resist the urge to impress and follow the sounds to wherever they take you.
TRUE WIDOW – Jackyl
FR : Une fois, quelqu’un a décrit True Widow comme l’alliance parfaite entre Black Sabbath et The XX. Pour nous, cela résume parfaitement leur essence, pourquoi on aime ce groupe. Le contraste entre leurs voix sinistres et les instruments à basse fréquence est absolument magique. True Widow nous a beaucoup influencé avec leurs lignes vocales mélancoliques mais mélodiques et intelligemment belles.
Ils sont capables de composer des chansons qui restent en tête avec une telle facilité. Le tout baignant par ailleurs dans une atmosphère calme et soutenu par un tempo lent et régulier. En définitive, nous adorons la façon humble qu’ils ont de délivrer leur musique. Même si nous aimons beaucoup expérimenter avec différents effets, l’approche directe de ce groupe nous permet de garder les pieds sur terre.
EN : Someone once described True Widow as a perfect marriage between Black Sabbath and The XX. For us, this might capture the whole essence of why we love this band. The contrast between their eerie vocals and low humming instruments is absolutely magical. True Widow has influenced us a lot with their mournful yet melodic and cleverly beautiful vocal lines.
They’re able to compose songs that stick to the ear with such an effortless ease. Everything drenched in a serene atmosphere and backed by a slow, steady tempo. We love the unpretentious way in which they are able to deliver their music. Even though we’re a big fan of experimenting with different effects, the fundamental approach of this band keeps us grounded.
DIIV – Doused
FR : Même si DIIV utilise principalement un tempo rapide, ils ont tendance à apporter une atmosphère rêveuse très écrasante. Et ils le font sans dériver dans les profondeurs de l’ambient pur ou du post-rock. Nous trouvons que DIIV expérimente beaucoup d’effets de manière intelligente, sur le chant et la guitare tout en créant des chansons magnifiques et identifiables. Oshin, leur premier album studio, est l’un de nos préférés. En effet, il est rempli de lignes vocales flottantes, belles et bien écrites. Si bien que vous pourriez écouter et réécouter cet album en un seul voyage.
EN : Even though DIIV is mostly uptempo, they tend to bring a very overwhelming dreamy atmosphere. They do this without drifting off in the depths of pure ambient or post-rock. We believe DIIV experiments in a clever way with lots of effects on both vocals and guitar whilst crafting beautiful and identifiable songs. Oshin, their first studio album is one of our all time favorites. It is full of beautiful and well written endless floating vocal lines. You could listen and relisten this album in one trip.
Heilung – In Maidjan
FR : Heilung c’est de la techno intense, puissante et primordiale. C’est incroyable comme ils semblent invoquer une force vieille de plusieurs siècles mais qui ne peut pas être réduite à une période ou à un lieu spécifique. Car Heilung est intemporel et transcendantal, dans la musique et les instruments, comme dans les paroles et les thèmes. Et ce mariage parfait de tous ces éléments est certainement une grande inspiration pour Pothamus.
EN : Heilung is intense, powerful, primordial techno. It’s incredible how they seem to summon some kind of a force that’s ages old, and yet cannot be reduced to one specific period or place. Heilung is timeless and transcendental, both in music and instruments, as in lyrics and themes. And that perfect marriage of all these elements is for sure a big inspiration for Pothamus.
WARDRUNA – Loyndomsriss
FR : Tout d’abord, nous connaissions déjà le leader Einar Selvik grâce à sa participation au groupe de black metal Gorgoroth. L’une des raisons pour lesquelles nous avons été immédiatement attirés réside dans la façon très captivante et bien pensée dont la section rythmique (et plus précisément les percussions) est construite ; non pas comme un passage obligé pour l’arrangement des chansons, mais comme un aspect fondamental et déterminant de leur musique.
De plus, ils ont un grand talent pour créer une atmosphère. En effet, on pourrait presque respirer l’air frais du Nord en écoutant une chanson comme Løyndomsriss. Ceci rend leur musique non seulement envoûtante, mais aussi extrêmement puissante. Enfin, nous avons beaucoup de respect pour la façon dont Einar Selvik aborde les thèmes de ses paroles.
Comme un érudit, il lit, fait des recherches et révise ; il apprend l’histoire, le symbolisme et le mysticisme. Il examine et étudie les sujets sur lesquels il chante, ce qui, pour nous, crée une couche fondamentale de profondeur palpable et de crédibilité. Ce sont donc ces différents aspects que nous admirons et applaudissons dans l’approche musicale de Wardruna, et que nous essayons également de consolider au sein de Pothamus.
EN : We already knew driving force Einar Selvik from his participation in Gorgororth. One of the more forthright reasons we were immediately drawn to this band, is the very captivating and well thought-out way the rhythm-section (and more specific: the percussion) is built up; not as some kind of a sheer requirement for the musical arrangement, but as a fundamental and defining aspect of their music.
Secondly, it’s their vast talent for creating atmosphere. One could almost breathe the crisp Nordic air when listening to a song like Løyndomsriss. This kind of transformational potential makes their music not only enchanting, but extremely powerful as well. Finally, we have great respect for the way Einar Selvik approaches the themes in his lyrics.
Like a scholar, he reads, researches and revises; learning about history, symbolism and mysticism. He examines and studies the topics he sings about, which, for us, creates this absolute fundamental layer of palpable profundity and credibility. It’s these three aforementioned aspects that we admire and applaud in Wardruna’s approach to music, and which we also attempt to consolidate within Pothamus.
