Al Green – Jesus Is Waiting
FR : C’est la chanson qui a inspiré la musique de « Suzy and Sally’s Eternal Return » du nouvel album. On ne dirait pas comme ça, mais maintenant que je l’ai dit, ça semble plutôt évident, non ? Il y a en fait une ruelle à Toronto qui s’appelle « Al Green Lane » – je ne suis pas sûre de la signification de ce nom, ou si c’est pour le même Al Green. Je dois faire des recherches plus approfondies. Quoi qu’il en soit, cette chanson est géniale.

Ride – Leave Them All Behind
FR : Putain, j’adore cette chanson. L’intro longue la plus belle, parfaite et cool jamais écrite. J’aimerais qu’elle dure 20 minutes de plus, même. Et puis finalement ils commencent à chanter – et c’est un sentiment incroyable. Cette chanson sonne comme la liberté pour moi. Et puis, la batterie est juste dingue, elle est à fond pendant tout le morceau. C’est une chanson incroyable à entendre en live aussi.
EN: I fucking love this song. The most beautiful, perfect and cool long intro ever. I wish it was 20 minutes longer, even. And then finally they start singing – and it’s the most amazing sentiment. This song sounds like freedom to me. And then the drums are just mental and going for it for like the whole song. It’s the most amazing song to hear live too.
Oasis – Bonehead’s Bank Holiday
FR : C’est l’une de mes chansons préférées d’Oasis. On peut y entendre un certain esprit d’amitié. Des amis qui font de la musique à partir de blagues comprises d’eux seuls en studio – on peut l’entendre cet esprit. On l’entend dans beaucoup de chansons d’Oasis. Ils ont vraiment l’air de passer le meilleur moment de leur vie – comme l’éclate absolue – et cela transparaît dans leur musique. J’aime ce groupe plus que tout. Ce sont les meilleurs.
EN: This is one of my favourite Oasis songs. You can hear the spirit of friendship in it. Friends at the studio making music out of inside jokes – you can just hear the spirit. You can hear that in so many Oasis songs. They genuinely sound like they’re having the absolute time of their lives – like an absolute ball – and it just seriously shines through the music and I love this band more than anything. They are the best.
Nina Simone – Who Knows Where The Time Goes
FR : Nous écoutions cette chanson à la fin de notre tournée en France il y a quelques années. Mike s’occupait de la musique dans le van à l’époque et je ne l’avais jamais entendue auparavant. J’ai commencé à paniquer et à pleurer en disant que c’était la plus belle chanson que j’avais jamais entendue. Je suis toujours étonnée quand un ami me fait écouter quelque chose que je n’ai jamais entendu auparavant, mais qu’il connaît depuis des années – j’ai toujours l’impression qu’il a un secret incroyable qu’il a gardé pour lui. J’ai fini par reprendre une ligne de cette chanson pour la chanson « Saint Michael » : « Where does the time go when you’re believing and everything… ».
EN: We were listening to this song at the end of our tour in France a few years ago. Mike was in charge of music in the van at the time and I had never heard this before, so I started freaking out and weeping and saying it was the prettiest song I had ever heard. I always am amazed when a friend plays me something that I’ve never heard before but they’ve known for years – I always feel like they’ve had this amazing secret they’ve been keeping. I ended up lifting a line from this song for the song « Saint Michael » : « Where does the time go when you’re believing and everything… »
Jefferson Airplane – My Best Friend
FR : Jefferson Airplane est l’un de mes groupes préférés de tous les temps. Cet album sera toujours aussi important et formateur pour moi. A une époque, je n’avais que trois DVD et pas de Wi-Fi, et l’un d’entre eux était le Monterey Pop Festival. Les deux autres étaient Don’t Look Back de Bob Dylan et Roméo et Juliette de Baz Luhrmann, donc Jefferson Airplane me rappelle toujours cette période de ma vie où j’étais coupée du monde, où je vivais seule et où j’écrivais beaucoup de musique. Mes dents de sagesse poussaient aussi à cette époque, j’ai souffert pendant six mois avant de me les faire enlever, donc j’ai fumé beaucoup d’herbe (rires).
EN: Jefferson Airplane are one of my all-time favourites. This whole album will always be so important and formative for me. I used to have only three DVDs and no Wi-Fi for a while, and one of them was Monterey Pop Festival and the other two were Bob Dylan Don’t Look Back and Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, so Jefferson Airplane always remind me of this period of my life where I was cut off from the world, living alone and writing a lot of music. My wisdom teeth were growing in during this time period too, I was in agony for about six months before I got them taken out, so I just smoked a lot of pot haha.
