EN: This song is one of my favorite traditional American folk songs. It’s beautiful haunting melody and pastoral lyrics evoke something at the heart of the spirit of the American landscape. The lines « roll away, you winding river » and « across the wide Missouri » are very resonant for me as someone who has long travelled through my country.

Billie Holiday – The Way You Look Tonight

EN: I’m a big fan of all the early torch songs but this one has to be my favorite. It was written by Gerome Kearn and was featured and sung by Fred Astaire in the movie Swing Time. But Billie Holiday’s recording is, of course, my favorite. For me, she is probably the greatest singer of all time. This recording captures her and her band at their very best and is just perfect.

Hank Williams – Lost Highway

EN: It’s hard to pick one Hank Williams song but this is probably my favorite. It captures every image and emotion of what a great country song is about. « Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine » says it all. It is immortalized by Bob Dylan in Don’t Look Back, although Bob forgets some of the verses. If I had to choose one recording of one song as the best of the 20th Century it would probably be this one.

Bob Dylan – Fourth Time Around

EN: My favorite tune on my favorite Dylan record. This is for me the peak of Bob in his Brechtian incarnation. The band is amazing on this whole record and the background arpeggios on this are so beautiful. This song inspired me to write many waltzes. It’s also got a great backstory involving a warning from Bob to John Lennon

John Prine – Crazy as a Loon

« You’ll be running around in circles out on Hollywood and Vine » dit tout.

EN: I feel like I have to include this song because it’s been my favorite tune over the last year of being inside and listening to my playlists over and over. I came to appreciate John Prine only in the last few years but I wish I had heard this song earlier. It’s one of my favorite songs to sing when I’m strumming the guitar around the house. « You’ll be running around in circles out on Hollywood and Vine » says it all.
